Hmmm... why would I want to perform those checks *after* installation?

Suggest:
(a) when running those tests, display a message saying they only work 
post-installation
(b) in the help text display, or in the installation guide, indicate what 
kinds of problem they are intended to pick up.  My assumption, which I 
think was reasonable, was that these were pre-installation checks to ensure 
that installation prerequisites were satisfied.
