[lm-announce] FW: microscope booking

Dear All,

Please disregard Benny's recent email about microscope access restrictions. We are currently demoing a variety of tools that should enable us to manage microscope time more efficiently. This includes access restriction for users who have not booked the microscope, various usage logging tools, a new webcalendar and so on. Benny has done an excellent job building some of these tools and thought we wanted to implement them right away. As it happens, we don’t – any system that affects your access and use of the microscopes will be discussed with you first. Over the coming weeks you can expect us to start talking to you about various things that we hope will improve how the facility runs, but please rest assured that we're not going to start doing a whole load of weird and wonderful things without properly consulting with you first.

To those of you who were kind enough to contact me today with your concerns about this system and to express your frustration at the lack of notice about this, please accept mine and Benny's apologies for freaking you out. This was an accident of good intention.

Finally, the point in all this, of course, is that there are a number of very important reasons that you make sure you are booked onto the microscope you are using. If it didn't matter, we wouldn't be addressing what is becoming an increasingly serious and frequent problem. To give a recent example – someone uses a microscope, they're not booked onto it and they break something expensive. They need more training, we don't know who they are, they go on to break more stuff. This happens here and it affects all of you. If you've ever had to wait for a new filter set, microscope stage, heater or objective lens to arrive from the vendor, it was most likely because one of your colleagues trashed the old one and didn't tell us.

Best regards,
Sam

Subject: [lm-announce] microscope booking

LMF users and colleagues

We intend to implement restrictions on microscope access based on the booking calendar. This means only the user who is booked in at a particular time will be able to access/login on that microscope.
I will be running this as a pilot in the AIL-lab starting 17/02/2010.
If the scheme works fine then I will roll it out to all the microscopes. This means for the mean time, users in ail-lab should keep the booking calendar up to date.

Many thanks

Benny
