Dear All-

The following seminar will be of interest to anyone thinking about
using FRET.

Dr Bob Clegg, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA, will give
a seminar in the WTB Seminar Rooms at 16.30 pm

Thursday 15 Jan at 16.30-17.30. WTB seminar room (back half):

"Energy transfer from the dark ages through enlightenment"

The development of our basic understanding of how energy is
transferred non-radiatively between two molecules, nowadays known as
Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), took place at an exciting
historical time when the foundations of Physics were being overturned
and paradigms were rapidly changing. A historical excursion through
the major scientific events shows how concepts and experimental
results in different fields of research, such as quantum mechanics and
photosynthesis, were eventually woven together to form our present day
understanding of FRET. We will follow the progression of ideas in this
field up to and including the landmark contributions of Theodore
Förster in 1946-1948. His theory has had an enormous impact on
physics, chemistry and biology.

Cheers,

Jason
