[lm-announce] Switching lamps on and off...

Dear All,
Could I please remind you all that switching the fluorescence lamps
on and off in quick succession reduces the lifetime of the bulb and
increases the risk of the bulb exploding (believe me - you don't want
to be around when that happens). If you turn a bulb off just before
the next user starts, it is a big waste of their time to have to wait
before they can switch it on again. This happened 3 times last week
and there were some seriously stroppy people wandering around asking
me to crack some skulls.
With this in mind, please memorize the 4 rules of fluorescence lamp
etiquette -
1. Leave the bulb on for 1 hour after you have turned it on. If you
use the microscope and discover your sample just ain't working, don't
switch the bulb off unless it has been on for an hour already.
2. Make sure the bulb has been switched off for an hour before you
turn it back on again. When you finish your session, please check
the webcalendar to see when the next person is going to start. If it
is within a couple of hours of your session finishing, please leave
the bulb ON. If you finish your session early, it is polite to let
the next user know the microscope is available early.
3. Let us know when the bulb is approaching 375 hours of use. The
bulbs need to be replaced at approx 400 hours, so please give us a
bit of notice on this.
4. When a bulb is replaced it needs to be left on for 24 hours to
"bed in". When we change a bulb we will write in the logbook when it
can be turned off again, but obviously if you are on the scope and
the lamp reading is at less than 24 hours, you'll need to leave it on.
Thanks!
Sam
