[ome-devel] data archiving options

Hi Yanling-

Apologies for the slow response.

We've discussed this before on this list. As Kees mentioned, DAX Archiving has a commercial product you might check out. Make sure it supports the version you need.

On the open source side, archiving was discussed a lot at our 2013 Users Mtg (http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/community/minutes/meetings/june-2013-paris-users-meeting<http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/community/minutes/meetings/june-2013-paris-users-meeting/?searchterm=pasteur>), and frankly, ever since. The challenge for us is making a generic solution that supports the wide range of archiving solutions available.

You mention relocating images onto tape. When we've looked at this in the past, we don't see a generic community-based API we can support (we have a TSM hierarchical system in Dundee, so are very familiar with this tech). If anyone has any insight or suggestions for solving this problem, do let us know. It is critically important that we address this issue, ideally with community guidance and help.

Thanks for this comment.

Cheers,

Jason

Hello Yanling,

We have developed a solution for this. You can find more on www.omerostoragemanager.com<http://www.omerostoragemanager.com>
That website also contains a downloadable version for evaluation.
Please understand this is a commercially available product supported by DAX Archiving Solutions B.V.
Feel free to contact me for more information.

Best regards, Kees Machielsen

Hi,

Supposedly in OME we have some old projects, we want to keep the record but nobody is likely to access these projects in foreseeable future.

One straight forward thinking is to keep project records in OME database but relocate images on disk to somewhere else such as tape. The benefit for doing this is to free up expensive enterprise storage space (which is raid 6 like).

However, if we do this, when people trying to access these old projects (if it is happens), OME will have trouble to load these old images unless we manually restore images from tape.

I wonder what would be you opinion on this.

Thanks,
Yanling
