I've opened a PR for your patch here:
https://github.com/openmicroscopy/bioformats/pull/1699

It's marked as excluded for now due to the imminent 5.1 release, but
once that's out it will be included into our merge build for review.
I'll add a commit to share the functionality with MetamorphReader as
discussed, and then any further changes can be made in review.  Your
collection of test images would certainly be useful to test against once
it's in the daily build, but we can follow up on the PR for that.
