I think that Dropbox support for network shares is definitely a much
desired feature. At least, my group would also love that.

In the meantime, you could instead do your imports periodically with e.g.
cron or Jenkins:

The main difference from what's on that page would be to do an in-place
import with symlinks instead of a regular one. The idea would be that users
are placing their data in its "final" location on the NAS, rather than into
some temporary "dropbox" folder that will get periodically sucked in and
cleaned out. I have not yet had time to try this approach, but I think it
would avoid the limitations of Dropbox.
