Dear All,

The OME Consortium (http://openmicroscopy.org/site/about/development-teams) is pleased to announce the release of OMERO and Bio-Formats 5.0.0-beta1.

This beta version introduces a new filesystem-based concept (OMERO.fs) for importing data into OMERO, and has been through several weeks of serious testing by the OME team. OMERO.fs is especially useful for working with large, complex images generated in HCS and digital pathology. Full details of OMERO.fs are available at:

http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/products/ome5/

Bio-Formats has been substantially updated, and includes improved performance for tile-based formats (e.g., virtual slides) and our first support for Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM). The list of changes and updates in Bio-Formats is here:

http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/support/bio-formats5/about/whats-new.html

The software is available at:

http://downloads.openmicroscopy.org/omero/
http://downloads.openmicroscopy.org/bio-formats/

For those of you new to OMERO, see http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/products/omero

Please note that 5.0.0-beta1 is not compatible with existing 4.x.x installations. While we have put a lot of effort into testing, OMERO-5.0.0-beta1 is for evaluation only, and should not be used for production installations. A DB upgrade from 4.x.x to 5.0.0-beta1 is NOT provided at this time. The final 5.0.0 release will provide scripts to upgrade from both 4.4.x and 5.0.0-beta1.

5.0.0-beta1 also introduces support for the new 2013-06 OME-XML schema, which is available here:

http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/support/ome-model/

Any problems or comments, please use the OME Forums or mailing lists:

http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/community

We are targeting the final release of 5.0.0 for late summer/early Fall.

Regards,
The OME Team
