I suspect that's because you've started the server with a session  
that has SSH X forwarding enabled or your started OMERO on a system  
under X. If you're starting the server via SSH with X forwarding  
enabled can you please try logging in to the system as follows:

ssh -x server.stjude.org

If you're starting OMERO under X, can you try the following before  
you execute the "run.sh" script:

unset DISPLAY
