Trying just now on Debian 9.9 with OMERO.insight-5.4.10-ice36-b105 and
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_212-8u212-b03-2~deb9u1-b03) I
can log in to demo.openmicroscopy.org just fine. (We'll soon upgrade it
to OMERO 5.5 though!)

Another variable to consider: Could the OpenSSL version be an issue? For me,

$ openssl version
OpenSSL 1.1.0j  20 Nov 2018

Is yours much different?
