Default python versions on the various platforms is certainly going to
be a big issue. Centos5 for example is 2.4. I didn't know OpenSuse was
2.5, but I guess I should have expected it.

No, unfortunately I don't know. I always manually add the Sun JDK on
RPM-based systems. You shouldn't, however, need the Ice java package
itself since we ship the jar file (lib/repository/ice-3.3.jar)
