Dear All,
Due to the likelihood of power surges in MSI/WTB on Wednesday the 13th November, it will be necessary to power down all of the microscopes in the Imaging Facility for the duration. Please note:
1. Shutdown applies to Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy and OMX - if you have booked a microscope for Wednesday you will need to reschedule your session
2. Please do not book a new slot on Wednesday, you won't be able to use it
3. Under absolutely no circumstances should you power up a microscope that has been turned off, even if you have been advised that the power supply to the building has been returned to normal
We will do our best to minimise disruption but please bear with us – it's going to take us some time to do a full shut down and restart on all of the equipment.
Best regards,
Sam

Subject: PLEASE READ: Electrical HV Switching 13th November 2013. Potential Interruption in Power Supply WTB and MSI Only

On Wednesday 13th November, there will be a considerable amount of electrical HV switching across campus, including in the Wellcome building substation. This will impact electrical supply in WTB and MSI only. The power supply to JBC will be unaffected.
Estates and Buildings have advised although there is no anticipated impact on electrical supply, there is always a slight risk, whilst this work is going on. Spikes on the supply will be inevitable and although the risk of a complete outage is extremely unlikely this cannot be eliminated. If there is a power failure, then the generators will be activated which will feed the essential maintained supplies.
PLEASE NOTE
· It is advised that any high-value or sensitive equipment should not be in use/switched on during this period.
· End users will be using equipment at their OWN RISK.
· Users will be advised when normal power supply is resumed.
· High Value or sensitive equipment should not be switch on until advised safe to do so.
HEALTH AND SAFETY – PLEASE NOTE
If chemical fume hoods, microbiological safety cabinets and other LEV are affected by power fluctuations, safety could be compromised. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid undertaking activities that require full containment, e.g. experiments producing highly toxic chemical vapours or infectious aerosols, during the at risk period.
Apologies for the short notice as CLS were only updated on Friday.
