[ome-users] Help Needed. Unable to open Omero Clients.

My two (euro) cents...
Running the clients on Linux give me the same error about the
preferences, but seems the error is harmless

If you can invoke successfully insight and importer on the same machine,
then there is a firewall blocking you somewhere. In my case I run the
server on a mac, have opened the ports between my workstation and the
mac, but forgot to open the port on the very same mac!
Can this be your problem?
